Scotland the Best 2012

January 6, 2012

“Fabulous conversion by Victor and Carina Contini of a lofty, pillared Georgian room towards the west end of Edinburgh’s better boulevard into the classiest restaurant on the street and the most stylish joint in town. Passion for food and good service always evident; and they are ubiquitous (although they also run The Scottish Restaurant in Princes St Gardens). Bar and central pizza oven, unexpected combos in a straightforward, oft-changing menu. Great people-watching strip of tabes on the street. 7.30am till LO 10pm (11pm Fri/Sat), 11am-9pm Sun. Bar open late.”

– A recent review from Peter Irvine’s Scotland the Best 2012

Well done team and thanks to all our lovely customers, suppliers and friends for your continued support xx

Centotre – that’s 103 in Italian…

Italian Red Wine!

June 17, 2011

We’re convinced!! Have you seen our new wine list?
It’s got to be good for you!!

In the beginning God covered the earth with broccoli, cauliflower and spinach, with green, yellow and red vegetables of all kinds so Man and Woman would live long and healthy lives.

Then using God’s bountiful gifts, Satan created Dairy Ice Cream and Magnums. And Satan said, ‘You want hot fudge with that? And Man said, ‘Yes!’ And Woman said, ‘I’ll have one too with chocolate chips’. And lo they gained 10 pounds.

And God created the healthy yoghurt that woman might keep the figure that man found so fair.

And Satan brought forth white flour from the wheat and sugar from the cane and combined them. And Woman went from size 12 to size 14.

So God said, ‘Try my fresh green salad’. And Satan presented Blue Cheese dressing and garlic croutons on the side. And Man and Woman unfastened their belts following the repast.

God then said ‘I have sent you healthy vegetables and olive oil in which to cook them’.

And Satan brought forth deep fried coconut king prawns, butter-dipped lobster chunks and chicken fried steak, so big it needed its own platter, and Man’s cholesterol went through the roof.

Then God brought forth the potato; naturally low in fat and brimming with potassium and good nutrition.

Then Satan peeled off the healthy skin and sliced the starchy centre into chips and deep-fried them in animal fats adding copious quantities of salt. And Man put on more pounds. God then brought forth running shoes so that his Children might lose those extra pounds.

And Satan came forth with a cable TV with remote control so Man would not have to toil changing the channels. And Man and Woman laughed and cried before the flickering light and started wearing stretch jogging suits.

Then God gave lean beef so that Man might consume fewer calories and still satisfy his appetite.

And Satan created McDonalds and the 99p double cheeseburger. Then Satan said ‘You want fries with that?’ and Man replied, ‘Yes, and super size ’em’. And Satan said, ‘It is good.’ And Man and Woman went into cardiac arrest.

God sighed ………. and created quadruple by-pass surgery.

And then …………. Satan chuckled and created the National Health Service.

THE FINAL WORD ON NUTRITION
After an exhaustive review of the research literature, here’s the final word on nutrition and health.:
1. Japanese eat very little fat and suffer fewer heart attacks than us.
2. Mexicans eat a lot of fat and suffer fewer heart attacks than us.
3. Chinese drink very little red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks than us.
4. Italians drink excessive amounts of red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks than us.
5. Germans drink beer and eat lots of sausages and fats and suffer fewer heart attacks than us.
6. The French eat foie-gras, full fat cheese and drink red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks than us

CONCLUSION: Eat and drink what you like. Speaking English is apparently what kills you.

Introducing, Oil – Olive Oil!

May 6, 2011

Have you met our new selection of olive oils??

Well, they are actually cold pressed extra virgin olive oil to be precise! These are as significant, flavoursome and as complex as any grape variety. We all know about Chardonnay and Chianti but if we said Coratina, Frantoio and Mignola would you know these are as special? Single estate, single olive variety exceptional taste. Each to be used for a different purpose. Just as you wouldn’t normally drink a Vin Santo dessert wine with a carpaccio of fish!

Come in and try for yourself on our new May menu:
Le Ferre Extra Virgin Olive Oil with our homemade breads
Fontodi Extra Virgin Olive Oil with our Italian salads
Poggiotondo Extra Virgin Olive Oil with our Scottish grilled fish

And if you like it as much as we do you can even take your favourite one home! Bottles on sale at reception.

New Menu for Maggio!

April 29, 2011

It’s a little early, but we just can’t wait! Our new May menu is out today!

We’ve added new season asparagus, brought back our special Spigola (Sea bass) by special request and we are pleased to introduce our new selection of extra virgin olive oils, sourced direct from Italy. Victor has carefully chosen these oils from a few of his favourite vineyards where we also source our wines. Or new wine list will also be out soon – watch this space!

Fresh From Milano!

April 28, 2011

Buying our Italian fruit and vegetables direct from the market in Milano ensures we serve only the freshest Italian flavours! We try and go over as much as possible so we don’t miss anything! Victor was there over two months ago and Carina will visit at the end of May.

We speak to our supplier every few days and receive a couple if deliveries each week. Violet aubergines, courgettes, several varieties of tomatoes, cremini mushrooms, new season pears, asparagus, onions, Amalfi lemons and so so so much more.

The produce we get is premium quality, each item coming from small largely organic farms throughout the regions of Italy. Pears from Emilia Romagna, tomatoes from Sicily, ramato tomatoes from Puglia, asparagus from Venito.  So exciting, so fresh, so simple and so Italian. Enjoy!

Amici del Vino – Special wine offer

November 4, 2010

For all of our fantastic amici del vino (wine enthusiasts) out there, Centotre is offering 2 very special wines at an amazing cost!

You cannot find these hard to find, quality wines at any other restaurant for these prices! Both are lovely to enjoy with Centotre’s new delicious winter menu (see below). Or why not revel in a sumptuous glass over a light afternoon snack and conversation?

Feel free to come in for a free taste of either wine anytime you like!

Salarola, Bianco del Veneto, Ca’Orologio, 2007, IGT (13.5%)

This lovely blend of Tocai (40%), Moscato (40%), and Riesling (20%) brings a tasty, textured organic white with subtle peach fruit tones along with notes of honeysuckle and caramel. Hailing from the hills of Veneto, this wine pairs perfectly with the Linguine con Pesto e Mezzancoli and Spigola (Scottish sea bass). An excellent value for this exquisite wine.
£7.50/gl, £29/btl

Montefalco Rosso, Antonelli 2006, DOC (14.5%)

This big, Umbrian full-bodied red is a blend of Sangiovese (70%), Sagrantino (15%), and Cabernet Sauvignon (15%). It has hints of black cherry and plum on the nose followed by aromas of blueberry, vanilla, tobacco, blackcurrant and menthol. Full of body and firm structure, this wine suits our Bresaola, Tagliata (Buccleuch sirloin steak), and Pizza Piccante, to name a few. A steal for red wine lovers!
£8.50/gl, £33/btl
